Introducing The Military Defense Firm

Serving those who serve our country.

It is with great pride and tremendous excitement that I introduce “The Military Defense Firm,” a division of True North Legal Group. Please let me tell you a bit more about myself and this amazing organization.

My name is Josh Traeger. I am a lawyer, entrepreneur, husband, father, and military officer. I served for ten years on active duty in the United States Air Force, from 2010 until 2020. During that time, I held three primary positions. First, I was a junior prosecutor at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia. Then, I served as the Area Defense Counsel (defense attorney) at Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. Finally, I was hand-selected as a Senior Trial Counsel (senior prosecutor) stationed at both Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado and Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C. In that final active-duty role, I traveled around the world dealing with the military’s most difficult criminal cases. I was away from home approximately 200 days per year handling courts-martial around the globe. After leaving active duty in 2020, I transferred into the Air Force Reserves. In my reserve capacity, I am an Instructor in the Military Justice Division of the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School.

When I left active duty, I joined a law firm based out of New York City. That firm represents military members facing disciplinary action, much like The Military Defense Firm. My partners in that firm, who also happen to be personal friends, were great supporters of me. During our time together, I grew into an even better legal advocate. I handled cases around the world for all service branches, despite confronting a global pandemic and significant changes in the military justice system. I am grateful for my time with that team and for the work we did together.

But in early 2024, I began to feel like I needed to do more. I recognized the vast military justice experience I had gathered over the years, and I realized that it was time to build a military law firm from my own image. I wanted to serve military clients in unique ways, leverage my experience to deliver exceptional results, and build a team of military justice experts dedicated to a common cause. Out of that vision came The Military Defense Firm.

The Military Defense Firm, or TMDF as we sometimes call it, is built on two simple principles:

  1. Mentality Matters. Our mindset is simple — we put clients first. We do not work in military justice for the money or the fame. We are in it to help people that need us. Everything we do is aimed at achieving the best possible results for the military members we represent. We prioritize communication, compassion, and consistency. We know that our clients come to us during some of the most stressful and difficult times in their lives. It is incumbent upon us to put their needs first.
  2. Experience Wins. To us, this is a tried and true tenet of military justice. The most capable and experienced counsel get the best results. Our firm will always be staffed by a team that has put in the work and developed the expertise. We hire and retain the most experienced military justice professionals, and we work every day to improve our legal knowledge and advocacy skills. With our clients’ careers and lives on the line, we leverage our experience to win.

I have a tremendous vision for the future of this firm and the ways in which we can serve military members all around the world. But no matter how much we grow or how far we reach, we will always remain true to these two founding principles.

Here’s my promise to you — you will never find a more dedicated, capable, and experienced legal team than the military justice professionals at The Military Defense Firm.

Although I am excited for the future, I am also eager about the present. I know that there are military members out there who need our help right now. Whether it’s an Airman receiving paperwork, a Sailor being involuntarily discharged, or a Soldier facing court-martial, we’re here for them. That’s the one and only reason we exist — to serve those who serve our country.

If you have read this far, I want to thank you. You likely learned about our firm from an email, a social media post, or a Google search. The fact that you have taken the time to read our story means a lot. I hope you’ll take just a few more minutes to look around. On this website, you can learn much more about the ways in which we help military members. You can also read about our beliefs, experiences, and the unique services we provide.

Perhaps the greatest reward of working in military justice for the past fifteen years has been the people I have encountered along the way. Not only have I been privileged to represent outstanding Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Guardians, but I have worked with and learned from tremendous military leaders, prosecutors, defense counsel, and judges. I will carry the lessons they gave me as I build this firm into the future, and I hope to make them proud.

But for now, let me know if we can help you or someone you know. Nothing motivates us more than the opportunity to deliver on that simple promise above — to showcase the dedication, capability, and experience of The Military Defense Firm.

A member of our team is always available for you — just call (833) 231-8633.

In service,

Josh Traeger
